Cleveland context
Much of Cleveland's most distinctive housing stock dates to the early twentieth century, when streetcar lines pushed development out into planned garden suburbs like Shaker Heights, built on former Shaker farmland by the Van Sweringen brothers starting in 1909, and dense, transit-oriented communities like Lakewood, which grew so quickly along its streetcar lines that it became one of Ohio's most densely populated cities.
